GAMES AND SPORTS

Cricket
Our First eleven captained by G.Selvin Loyd played 9 matches, won 6 and drew 3. There were 3 outright wins and 3 Innings victories. V.J.Lourdson scored a century (125) against Union College. The Limited overs match for the Rajan Kadirgamar Challenge Trophy was won by St.Patrick’s team.

The Under 16 cricket team led by V.Vithubala entered the All Island Astra Cricket Tournament and came up to the Semi finals. It played 11 matches, won 10 and lost one. It became champions in Jaffna Schools Cricket Association Tournament by winning all the matches

The Under 14 team led by M.A.Niloshan played 8 matches, won 6 and became runners up in the Jaffna Schools Cricket Association Tournament. The Under 12 cricket team led by R.J.Jefferson Joseph played five matches and became champions of JSCA tournament by winning all the matches. Our sincere thanks to our coaches Mr.S.Sahayarajah, Mr.A.S.Nishanthan and Revd.Bro.Antony Francis for their tireless service in the cricket field.

Soccer
Our Ist Eleven soccer team captained by K.Sutharshan played 8 matches, won 7, and drew one. The 2nd Eleven led by P.Pimans played 8 matches, won 6, drew one and lost one. The 3rd Eleven played 8 matches, won 5, drew 1 and lost2. The Baby Eleven led by G.Rockinson played 8 matches won 3 and lost 5.

The under 19 soccer team led by F.S.Felix participated in the All Island Milo Cup, Division II soccer tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Football Association and became champions. In the Inter-Schools Peace Tournament conducted by Jaffna College, Vaddukottai, our Ist Eleven became champions. C.Roshanthan captained this team.

For the second time we entered the Under 18 soccer tournament conducted by the Education Department and became champions in the Divisional, Zonal, and Sub-Provincial levels. Our team was captained by P.Pimans. We thank our coaches Mr.Berty Bannister who was in charge of the Ist and 2nd Elevens and Mr.C.Suresh in charge of the 3rd and Baby Eleven soccer teams.

Athletics
Our Annual Inter-House Athletic Meet was held on the 17th of February 2004 with Dr.Thirunavukarasu Kamalanathan, the President of Jaffna National College of Education and his wife Ranjitham as the Chief Guests. Matthews House emerged champions.The Primary Department had its Sports Meet on the 11th of February 2004 with Revd.Dr.N.M.Saveri, the Director of the Centre for Performing Arts, as the Chief Guest.

The College Athletic team led by R.V.Remitton participated in the Divisional Meet and obtained 19 first places, 13 second places and 8 third places. At the Zonal Meet we obtained 15 first places, 10 second places and 8 third places. In the sub-Provincial Meet we won 11 first places, 6 second places and 6 third places.
In the North East Provincial Meet we obtained 2 first places, a second place and a third place. At the National Meet G.Selvin Loyd got the 4th place in the under 21 Putt Shot event. We thank Mr.Berty Bannister our Athletic coach for his valuable guidance to our boys.

Volleyball
After a long interval, we have revived this sport. We were able to conduct Inter-House Volleyball competitions and Long House emerged champions.

Mini Tennis
Our Mini Tennis team (Age 8) did extremely well at the district level matches and 6 of our boys were selected for the District Boys Team. At the All Island Mini Tennis competitions conducted by the SLTA, the Jaffna Team became champions and won gold medals for the second time. Our hearty congratulations to our Minni Tennis players and the teacher-in-charge, Mrs.Rajitha Augustine.

Indoor Games
It is due to the tireless efforts of our teacher, Mrs.Mallika John Ariyathas that we were able to conduct the Inter-House tournaments for Chess and Table Tennis. Though we could not conduct the Badminton competitions within the school, our boys were able to get a second place at the Zonal level competitions. B.J.M.Charlas captained the Chess Team while A.Aushan and M.R.Pravin captained the Table Tennis and Badminton teams respectively.

While concluding the sports activities I should place on record the dedicated services of the Prefect of Games, Mr.S.Sahayarajah, and the other teachers in charge of various sports activities. They sacrificed their leisure time and worked hard to promote true sportsmanship among our students.
